The Year I Almost Walked Away From Flair Scents Co.

Six years into building this brand, someone asked me how business was going, and I noticed myself flinching before I answered. That flinch is the honest part of this post.

I Did Everything I Was Told To Do

A full rebrand. A year of it, actually — new visual identity, a rebuilt website, product photography redone from scratch. I brought on content creators. I chased wholesale accounts. I sat down and optimized processes that genuinely needed optimizing. On paper, I did the work. If you'd handed me a checklist of "what a small business owner is supposed to do to grow," I could have checked off almost every box.

And the return still didn't show up the way it was supposed to. Not because any single decision was wrong — but because I was so deep in tactics that I'd stopped asking the harder question underneath all of it.

The Wall

If you've run a small business for any real length of time, you already know this wall. It's not one bad month or one disappointing launch. It's the slow accumulation of working hard, correctly, on the right things — and still not feeling like you're getting anywhere. Nobody warns you that doing everything "right" can still end in burnout. I assumed burnout was what happened when you did things wrong.

I told myself I'd take 90 days completely off — no pushing, no spending, no touching the business at all. I lasted four.

That's not a productivity flex. If anything, it told me something I needed to hear: I wasn't actually done. I just needed to stop long enough to remember that.

What Coming Back Actually Looked Like

It wasn't coming back to grind harder. It was coming back with a different question — not "what else can I add," but "what actually matters here, and what have I been doing out of habit or fear of falling behind?" Small business advice loves to tell you to do more. Almost nobody tells you that sometimes the fix is doing less, on purpose, and meaning it.

I built Flair around the idea that scent should feel like therapy — a small, deliberate pause in someone's day. I spent six years so focused on building that idea for other people that I forgot to give myself any version of it. That's the part I'm actually working on now.

If you're a small business owner reading this mid-wall right now — I don't have a tidy ending for you. I have four days out of a planned ninety, and a business I came back to on purpose instead of out of guilt. Some days that's the whole win.
