Both fill a room with scent, but they work on completely different mechanics — and the oils that go in each one aren't interchangeable. Mixing them up is the single most common mistake people make with home fragrance devices.
How They Actually Work
A reed diffuser is passive — fibre reeds pull neat (undiluted) fragrance oil upward through capillary action and release it into the air as it evaporates. No power, no water, no device. See our full reed diffuser guide.
An ultrasonic humidifier is active — it vibrates a small water reservoir at ultrasonic frequency to create a fine, cool mist, which carries a few drops of essential oil blend out into the room along with actual humidity. It needs power (USB) and water to work at all.
⚠️ The oils are not interchangeable. Our reed diffuser oil is a concentrated, undiluted oil built for capillary action. Our Humidifier Essential Oil Blend is formulated to be mixed into water for an ultrasonic device — it explicitly should not be used in a reed diffuser, and diffuser oil shouldn't go in a humidifier's water tank either. Same brand, same goal, different chemistry.
What Each One Actually Gives You
Which One Should You Get?
If you want a set-and-forget background scent with zero upkeep, a reed diffuser wins. If you also want the humidity benefit — helpful for dry winter air, static, or a stuffy bedroom — or you like the idea of a flame-effect night light doing double duty, an ultrasonic humidifier is the better fit. See our Mini vs. Flame comparison to pick between our two humidifier options.
