Candle Safety: Burning Around Kids & Pets

Candle Care
By Flair Scents Co. · Home Fragrance

With a candle, the real risk in a home with kids or pets isn't the wax or the fragrance — it's the open flame, exactly like it would be with a stove burner or a lit match. Treat it with that level of attention and it's genuinely low-risk.

What Actually Matters

Never leave it burning unattended
This is the one rule that matters most, especially with a curious toddler or a cat that jumps onto counters and shelves. Extinguish it any time you leave the room, even briefly.
Place it out of reach, not just out of sight
A shelf a toddler can't reach today might be reachable in six months. A cat can get to most surfaces a dog can't — factor in jumping height, not just tabletop height.
Keep it away from tails, curtains, and paper
A wagging tail or a curious nose near an open flame is the most common way a candle actually causes a problem — not the fragrance itself.
Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface
Away from the edge of a table or shelf where a bump from a kid or a pet's paw could tip it over.

🕯️ Our candles are 100% organic soy wax with a 100% cotton wick and paraben-free fragrance — no lead, no synthetic wick core. That makes for a cleaner burn, but it doesn't change the fact that an open flame needs the same supervision any open flame does.

A Few More Habits Worth Building

Trim the wick to ¼" before every burn — it keeps the flame smaller and more predictable. Store matches and lighters somewhere separate from the candle itself, not tucked underneath it. And if you'd rather skip the open flame altogether in a kid- or pet-heavy room, a reed diffuser or ultrasonic humidifier gets you the same scent with no flame at all.
